4 Week Course
Are you getting ready to start teaching your dog a retrieve? Maybe you have started but are stuck somewhere in the shaping of it. Do you find that you have an unwanted behavior in your retrieve such as playing with the dumbbell before picking it up, or mouthing it after the pick up? Then this class is for you! We talk about why the retrieve can be difficult to train, why errors are so easy to chain in and how to go step by step through the teaching of the retrieve. We take apart the steps of teaching a retrieve and break it down, break it down, break it down for you and your dog!
Week 1: Break down the different parts you will be training. Time for a training plan! How to get from where you are now to where you want to be. Over view of shaping procedure. Working on timing and presentation without the dog.
Week 2: How to up the criteria when shaping. How do you know when you have “enough” to move on? What is mass? How much do you need? What if you have been stuck in one spot in training for a long time?
Week 3: Duration of hold behavior. This is the heart of the retrieve, but don’t get stuck here! Get it and get going! How much duration do you need? How do you get the dog to start independently holding the retrieve object?
Week 4: The “go get it” . Now we are on our way to a nice retrieve behavior! We still need the dog to realize that they need to go and get the object and get it back to us. How do we start to introduce that the object will be away from us and the dog is to get it and let us take it from them? How to intelligently proof the hold behavior without creating a problem of the dog not releasing the object
